Interventional Pulmonology

Interventional pulmonary is a relatively new subspecialty of Pulmonary Medicine that is dedicated to advanced procedures in pulmonary and critical care. These involve diagnostic, therapeutic and palliative procedures. At present, we have full range of interventional pulmonary services at OSU:

  • Endobronchial Ultrasound
  • Argon Plasma Coagulation
  • Cryotherapy
  • Electrocautery
  • Nd-YAG laser
  • Rigid Bronchoscopy
  • PleurX catheters
  • Medical Thoracoscopy under Conscious Sedation
  • Airway Stents
  • Ultrasound guided thoracentesis
  • Balloon Dilation
  • Autofluorescence Bronchoscopy
  • Narrow Band Imaging
  • Foreign Body Removal with Flexible or Rigid Bronchoscope
  • Thoracic ultrasound

In addition to these advanced procedures we also do the following routine bronchoscopic procedures:

  • Bronchoalveolar Lavage
  • Endobronchial Biopsy
  • Trans Bronchial Needle Biopsy and Aspiration of lung mass or lymph glands
  • Transbronchial Biopsy of lung mass


In the ICU we do the following Critical Care Procedures:

  • Percutaneous Tracheostomy
  • Ultrasound guided thoracentesis, paracentesis, line placement, lumbar puncture, etc.
  • Ultrasound evaluation of critically ill patients in the ICU

Dr. Shaheen Islam is the director of the Interventional Pulmonology program at The Ohio State University.  He did an Interventional Pulmonary Fellowship at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, MA.  He sponsors and teaches courses at OSU on techniques such as percutaneous tracheostomy, and has been invited nationally and internationally to present his work.
