Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD is a very common disease that effects over 12 million individuals in the United States. It is the fourth leading cause of death. COPD is a term used to describe patients with emphysema, chronic bronchitis or a combination of both.

Symptoms of COPD include:

• Shortness of breath with activity or while resting
• Wheezing
• Chest tightness
• A daily or almost daily cough cough that produces mucus

Individuals with COPD may have other associated medical problems such as muscle weakness, sleep problems, weight loss and mood changes. Our COPD team consists of a dedicated group of physicians, nurses and staff who work together to bring you the most comprehensive care available.

The Ohio State Multidisciplinary Cough Clinic helps people with chronic coughs lasting at least six weeks. Board-certified pulmonologists evaluate patients, who can expect to receive pulmonary function testing with additional radiography and diagnostic endoscopy as required. The clinic occurs Wednesday mornings at The Ohio State Eye and Ear Institute.

Ohio State general pulmonary specialists can help patients with coughs, shortness of breath, wheezing, chest pain and tightness. We also specialize in testing for abnormal pulmonary function and low oxygen levels, as well as lung nodules tests and chest x-rays or CT (computerized tomography) scans.

Your immune system may become suppressed as a result of common treatments for cancer, arthritis or rheumatologic disorders. HIV and organ or bone marrow transplantation can suppress the immune system too. The Ohio State Immunosuppression Clinic helps patients with suppressed immune systems, which often can involve the lungs. If you’re having lung problems and have a suppressed immune system, ask your doctor about a referral.

Bone Marrow Transplantation
About 50% of patients after bone marrow transplantation will develop lung complications. Often this is in the form of infections that develop in the lung, but other times it is a side effect of chemotherapy or radiation therapy give before transplantation. One very serious complication is when graft versus host disease targets the lung and results in bronchiolitis obliterans. This is a progressive disease that results in airflow obstruction similar to emphysema. Vincent Esuguerra, MD is the primary doctor for bone marrow transplantation.

It is likely that new techniques for early identification, improved understanding of the molecular heterogeneity that exists in lung cancer and novel targeted therapies will all contribute to increasing survival. Historically, lung cancer diagnosis and management has involved oncologists and surgeons with very little role for the pulmonologist. However, it is increasingly recognized that a multidisciplinary approach provides more comprehensive care patients with lung cancer. The Ohio State University Pulmonary Oncology Clinic is committed to providing the most advanced care in the management of patients across the spectrum ranging from suspected diagnosis to management of treatment complications.

Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disease of unknown cause that often involves the lungs, but can also involve other vital organs. Sarcoidosis can be confused with other lung diseases. In most cases, sarcoidosis requires little or no treatment, but the optimal treatment of sarcoidosis can be very complicated in certain sarcoidosis patients.

The Ohio State University Sarcoidosis Clinic is devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of sarcoidosis involving the lungs and other organs. Using the latest technology and by integrating the most recent advances in the field, we strive to individualize the care of each sarcoidosis patient to minimize the impact of the disease on daily lives. The Tobacco Dependency Clinic specializes in helping people quit tobacco. This clinic provides consultation and support services to assist those who are thinking about or are ready to stop smoking and using tobacco.

• Patients will meet with our nurse practitioner, Gretchen Whitby, CNP, CTTS, for individualized assessment, behavioral counseling and pharmacologic treatment as appropriate
• Patients receive support and resources throughout their effort to stop smoking and using tobacco
• Visits will last 40 to 50 minutes initially, and 20 minutes thereafter. Patients will be offered additional visits on an as needed or case by case basis
• Ongoing communication with patients will be available via telephone or through MyChart
• Patients who may benefit include:
  
  • Patients who are thinking about quitting
  • Patients who are in the process of quitting but need additional support
  • Patients who have quit but are worried about relapsing
  • Patients who would like prescription tobacco cessation medications to help them quit
